Apparatus including an external voltageless or grounded probe for selectively writing and erasing information on a gas discharge plasma display panel matrix. The plasma panel cells contain an ionizable gas and are subjected to a sustaining voltage. Proximity of the probe to a selected cell varies the field strength within the cell and accordingly ionizes or de-ionizes gas depending on whether the front or rear electrodes of the panel are grounded.
