<p>Flexible TaC fibre matls., e.G., single filaments, strips, or tapes, are prepd. by contacting (1) a fibre matl. contg. >=50wt.% Ta2O5 and having surface >=1 m2/g., with (2) a mixt. of H2 and 0.1-10(0.2-5)vol.% CH4 at 800-1800 degrees C for a time sufficient to convert Ta2O5-fibre matl. to TaC-fibre matl. having ave. individual fibre dia. 25 mu. Pref. the filaments or helical strips are used for incandescent lamps and other lightning devices or as super-conductors at low temps. The TaC filaments are homogeneous, highly flexible and generate a whiter light than WC; the conversion to carbide being quicker, e.g., 1-5 hrs.</p> |
