<p>The liquid is spread over a continuously moving strip, to which items are stuck, by forming a sheet of the liquid by means of a layering device mounted near the strip path, the sheet being maintained between the device and the strip so that it does not move in the direction of travel of the latter. This is achieved by applying gas pressure to the upstream face of the sheet which is lower than a pressure acting on the downstream face. The difference between the two pressures is increased until just before an item reaches the sheet, and then held constant while the item passes across it. The difference is then reduced to the initial value again.</p> |
