1395320 Telescopic shaft couplings GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 13 July 1972 [30 July 1971] 35852/71 Heading F2U A torque transmitting coupling comprises a (e.g. mild steel) hollow section member 10, within which is an inner (e.g. mild steel) member 13, there being a clearance round the member 13 containing a resilient (e.g. rubber) member 15 (e.g. encircling the member 13) and a liner, the resilient member 15 being able to transmit torque between the members 10 and 13, and with the liner being axially slidable relative to one (e.g. the member 10). The cross-sections of the members 10 and 13 may be square, oval, lenticular, or rectangular with a breadth/depth ratio of about 2 : 1. The inner member 13 may be hollow. The resilient member 15 may be bonded or keyed to the inner member 13 and may be to the liner (e.g. of PTFE or acetal resin impregnated with PTFE) comprising two members 16 (as in Fig. 4) which slide in the member 10. The members 16 may have lips 17 which enter grooves (21) Fig. 5 (not shown) of about thrice the lip's axial dimension to limit axial distortion of the member 15 which may be precompressed. In the event of break-down of the member 15, the members 10 and 13 are of such a cross-section as to transmit torque therebetween. |
