1399726 Water-containing material STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 11 Aug 1972 37570/72 Heading C1B [Also in Division C3] A method of making a water storage material which is in the form of tubular filaments or hollow spheres in which water is enclosed, includes adding an aqueous solution of sodium alginate, in droplet form or as a filament extruded from a jet, to an aqueous solution of a water-soluble calcium salt such that the alginate and calcium salt react at the interface between the two solutions to form a continuous gel layer of calcium alginate trapping water therein, and covering the gel layer with a protective gel film of aluminium alginate produced by reaction of residual sodium alginate in the gel layer with an aqueous solution of an aluminium salt, and in which the gel layer and gel film are permeable to water vapour. The material may be used as a source of water in plant growth media. |
