<p>The parent patent describes a device for the prodn. of fresh water from sea-water by the use of a flexible tube with one end at a high altitude and the other at sea-level. In the patent of addn., the tube or conduit forms a closed circuit; it is hermetically sealed to the external air and is under reduced press. in order to facilitate evapn. of the sea-water. The base of the conduit is half immersed in the sea-water which penetrates through the orifices, pierced in its base. The rarefied air becomes charged with water vapour and passes into the conduit above the sea; it is put into motion by a powerful fan and is forced up to a high altitude, losing heat on its way through the walls of the conduit. The latter opens out into a much larger section where a slight adiabatic expansion takes place; this cools the air which becomes satd. with water vapour. This condenses and the water collects along the walls of the upper conduit. The fall of the water is uded to operate a hydraulic ram for compressing air drawn from the ascending conduit. This air is expanded in the condesn. circuit and greatly contributes to a further lowering of temp. so that practically all the vapour is condensed. The air continues its movement into the descending conduit where it undergoes a slight heating under the Foehn effect until it reaches a large, black, thin metallic reservoir, this rests on the ground and heats the air by solar radiation. The hot, dry air passes again over the surface of the sea and the whole cycle starts again.</p> |
