1496198 Aqueous paint compositions FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 3 June 1975 [3 June 1974 (3)] 23965/75 Heading C3P An aqueous paint comprises, as film forming ingredients, a carboxy functional polymer component and an amino resin cross-linking agent therefor disposed in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble amine in which the carboxy functional polymer component comprises an acrylic polymer component comprising (a) from 5 to 50 parts by weight of a solution polymer which is a carboxy functional polymer of acrylic monomers having an average molecular weight of from 3000-20,000 and a glass transition temperature of from - 15‹ to 50‹ C., which solution polymer is at least partially neutralized with water-soluble amine and is soluble in the aqueous solution, and (b) from 95 to 50 parts by weight of an emulsion polymer which is a carboxy and/or hydroxy functional copolymer of acrylic monomers having an average molecular weight of from 3000 to 20,000 and a glass transition temperature of from - 15‹ to 50‹ C., which emulsion copolymer is substantially insoluble in the aqueous solution; and the amino cross-linking agent is a melamine-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resin present in an amount of from 15-35% by weight based on the weight of the acrylic polymer component. Four general methods of preparation are described involving both solution and emulsion polymerization techniques. Acrylic and methacrylic acid esters and their homologues may form both the soluble and insoluble components of the paint compositions according to the invention. Catalysts, e.g. p-toluene sulphonic acid and solvents, e.g. alcohols and ethers may also be incorporated. Many examples are given which describe starting materials, reaction conditions and physical properties of the products. |
