A sensor element takes the form of a guideway which as a lowest point, is arranged in a vertical plane and has a closed cross section at right angles to this plane. This guideway is intended for a contact element, preferably mercury, which is sensitive to inclination and moves freely in the guideway. An oblong electrical resistance element (30) is laid with insulation in the guideway and is connected at both ends and by a centre contact to a circuit for measuring electrical resistance which contains an indicator and/or control unit. The guideway has in its plane an enclosed, preferably, circular, shape without sealed free ends.
