<p>The vehicle driven by an electric motor and an internal combustion engine drives the wheels via an epicyclic train. The epicyclic train is driven by both power sources and normally (forward running) rotates in the same direction as the wheels. Two parts of the train are joined to the engine and wheels and the planet to the motor. The gear ratios are closed to give the same rotational speed. When the vehicle is stopped the power sources can rotate in opposite directions, the motor acting as a generator. When engine speed is zero, so is the vehicle speed reduced and its direction reversed.</p> |
