1425586 Laminated fibrous pad PORTWAYS Ltd 15 March 1974 [16 Dec 1972] 58211/72 Heading B5N An insulating pad for an upholstery unit comprises a base layer of synthetic staple fibres, said base layer having a thickness of at least <SP>1</SP>/ 16 inch and a minimum weight of 3 ounces per square yard and being formed from a web of synthetic staple fibres which has been consolidated by needling, and a surface layer of synthetic staple fibres joined to the base layer by needling and having a thickness of at least “ inch and a minimum weight of 5 ounces per square yard, the base and surface layers being provided with an adhesive which bonds interengaging fibres together where they inter-engage. The pad may be made by needling a layer of synthetic staple fibres having a minimum weight of 3 ounces per square yard to form a consolidated base layer at least <SP>1</SP>/ 16 inch in thickness, needling a web of synthetic staple fibres having a minimum weight of 5 ounces per square yard to form a surface layer at least “ inch in thickness, joining the two layers by needling and applying an adhesive to the layers to bond inter-engaging fibres where they interengage. The staple fibres may be of nylon or preferably polyester. The adhesive, which may be applied by spraying or dipping may be a cross-linkable butadiene-styrene copolymer, a carboxylated butadiene-styrene copolymer or a styrene-modified acrylic copolymer and is preferably cured by the application of heat. |
