Each cylinder (2) is connected to the cylinder head (4) by a single passage (6), by which the gases are admitted and discharged. Timing is effected by a component (11) which turns on an axis which is the extension of the engine rotational axis, and which has ports opening and shutting each passage to a cylinder in accordance with the engine operating cycle. The inlet and exhaust ports can be joined together so as to lead into a single intake and exhaust respectively, both of them coaxial to the engine. There can be a joint enclosing the rotary component, providing a seal between it and each of the cylinders.
