Petrol-driven 2-stroke and rotary-piston engines are lubricated by introducing into the engine a lubricant compsn. comprising (a) a base lubricant contg. 10-100 (esp. 20-100) wt.% of >=1 ether, simple esters, complex esters, polyesters and ether esters of polyalkylene glycols of formula: HO(RO)nH (where each R is a 2-5C divalent aliphatic radical, pref. ethylene and/or propylene; n = 2-50) and (b) conventional additives, and having a viscosity of >6cS at 98.9 degrees C, the compsn. being introduced in an amt. such that the amt. fo base lubricant is =2 wt.% of the amt. of fuel required for the operation of the engine. When the compsn. contains a minor amt. of polyalkylene glycol deriv., the amt. of base lubricant is pref. 0.5-2 wt.%, and when it contains a major amt. of polyalkylene glycol deriv., the amt. is pref. 0.1-1 wt.% (for 2-stroke engines). For rotary-piston engines, the amt. is pref. 50 ppm to 2 wt.%.
|
