1362127 Diaphragm cells ORONZIO DE NORA IMPIANTI ELETTROCHIMICI SpA 6 Nov 1972 [9 Nov 1971] 50974/72 Heading C7B A bi-polar electrolytic diaphragm cell comprises a number of cell units mounted one on top of the other, positive and negative electrical connections being provided for the top and bottom units and bi-polar electrical connections being provided between the units, each unit comprising a ferrous metal (e.g. steel) cathode frame 7 having a metal cathode screen 7a in horizontal wave form with a diaphragm 7e e.g. of asbestos fibre thereon and electrically connected to a corrugated metal bottom plate 8(a), and dimensionally stable hollow valve metal (e.g. Ti, Ta, Zr, Mo, Nb or W) anode blades 10, with a conducting electrocatalytic coating (comprising a Pt group metal and/or oxide) thereon, electrically connected e.g. via Ti strips 10a to a corrugated valve metal back plate 10b mounted on an insulating (e.g. glass fibre reinforced polyester resin or PVC) anode frame 9 in turn mounted on the cathode frame 7, between each cathode wave to form an electrode gap. For electrolysis of brine solution, the electrolyte is fed, e.g. from glass fibre reinforced polyester resin or PVC containers, into the cell to pass through the hollow anodes and through holes 10d in the lower portions into the electrode gap, whereby chlorine carrying anolyte rises, creating circulation and giving lower ohmic resistance. The hollow anodes may also be diaphragm covered, both anolyte (with chlorine) and catholyte (with NaOH) passing through the diaphragms.
|
