A lifting device for the charging hole covers of coke ovens of the horizontal chamber type includes a lifting magnet which can be revolved before re-seating the cover to clear coal dust off its seat. The slip rings for the power supply to the electromagnet are arranged in an insulating part of the rotary section and are coupled to the magnet coils by a plug-in connection. The brushes are fixed with their holders in an insulating cover. This protects the current supply against the ingress of dust and heat and reduces the required maintaince. The electromagnet can be easily removed for inspection. The design is very robust and the danger of internal short-circuits is eliminated.
