1473247 Hair cutting devices A N SPANEL 2 Jan 1975 [13 March 1974] 48/75 Heading B4B A hair cutter comprises an elongated cage 18 having a plurality of comb elements 18c forming at least one row of apexes, a blade carrier 14 within the cage for supporting a blade 11 for lateral movement in either of two directions toward or away from the apexes, the cutting device having a support 16 for the blade carrier and driving means 24 for producing the lateral movement, the cage being provided with guide tracks enabling the cage to be longitudinally moved with respect to the blade carrier from a first hair cutting position to a stop position in which unobstructed removal and replacement of the blade is permitted. The cage is provided with a carrier 20 on which are formed the tracks for co-operation with mating tracks 16e, 16f on the blade carrier support 16. The cage carrier 20 is formed with a latching surface 20d which, in the hair cutting position of the cage shown in Fig. 1, engages with a latch 35. Upon depression of a button 34 the latch is disengaged and the cage carrier can be pulled by a finger grip 20b, to the position in which the cage is clear of the blade carrier, Fig. 3 (not shown); in this position the latching surface 20d engages a stop (16m), Fig. 4 (not shown). In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the cage carrier has an extension 70 provided at its free end with a latch 70a adapted, in the closed position of the cage, to engage in a slot 72, Fig. 7, provided in a handle of the support 16. By depressing a button 52 on the extension, the latch 70a is disengaged such that the cage can be moved to the open position wherein the latch engages a second slot 72a in the handle. The blade carrier is moved laterally when the cage is closed by means of a gear 24, Fig. 5, on a shaft 26 and rotatable by a knob 28. The shaft has an extension 26a provided with a groove which engages with the edge of a slot 70c formed in the extension 70 thereby preventing the lateral movement of the blade carrier when the cage is in an open position. Guide runners (74), Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), may be connected to the cage in order that the user may maintain the correct angle of the blade relative to the hair. Various other safety devices and modifications concerned with the drive means for the blade carrier are described in U.K. Specification No. 1,427,504.
