1492760 Jointing by forging ETHICON Inc 23 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 55389/74 Heading B3H [Also in Division D1] A suture 20 is swaged into the barrel end 21 of a needle 22 by compressing the needle with four flat surfaces 14 so that the suture is gripped about more than half its periphery by the needle. The swaging is effected by a single stroke of two dies 10, 11 each die having a V- shaped channel 13 to provide the flat surface. There may be three, Fig. 5 (not shown), or more surfaces 14. The suture may be formed from nylon, gut, silk or cotton, being either multistrand, e.g. braided silk or single strand, e.g. polypropylene monofilament. The needle may be drawn stainless steel with the axial opening in barrel end 21 being a drilled hole or formed by closing-over a channel. |
