1436817 Recovering polymethyl methacrylate FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 5 Nov 1974 [5 Nov 1973] 47835/74 Heading C3P Polymethyl methacrylate is recovered from a mixture of polymeric and optionally other materials containing it by (1) contacting the mixture with a boiling C 5 -C 8 alkane; (2) separating the alkane and alkane extract from the resultant insoluble residue containing polymethyl methacrylate; (3) extracting polymethyl methacrylate from the insoluble residue with boiling acetone; and (4) separating the polymethyl methacrylate from the acetone. The recovered polymer may subsequently be pyrolized to obtain methyl methacrylate monomer. Contact with the boiling alkane may be for 30 minutes to 20 hours, as with the boiling acetone. In the examples, a mixture containing polymethyl methacrylate, rubber, "assorted plastics", P.V.C. fabric, metal, polyvinylbutyral, glass, tar, and dirt, is treated. Alkanes used are n-hexane, petroleum ether (C 5 alkane hydrocarbons), and n-octane.
|
