The safety type ski binding is for cross country and speed skiing application. A speed plate or assembly can pivot to a large angle an axis running across the width of the ski. A boot sole attachment device is connected which releases the boot if a certain loading is exceeded, allowing complete disengagement of boot and binding. At least the forward sole retention device is attached to an overload release plate which is fixed to the speed plate. The plate is held down until overloaded by a spring operated ratchet device.
