1373634 Ammonium or potassium zirconium carbonates MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON Ltd 13 Oct 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 49144/71 Heading C1A An aqueous solution of ammonium or potassium zirconium carbonate is made by reacting zirconium basic carbonate with an aqueous solution or slurry of ammonium or potassium carbonate. In order that the molar ratio of carbonate to Zr in the solution is not greater than 2, the ammonium carbonate solution must contain from 1À0 to 1À5 moles of (NH4)2CO3 per mole of basic (ZrCO3)2 or from 0À8 to 1À3 moles of K2CO3 per mole basic Zr(CO3)2. The reaction may be carried out at temperatures up to 65‹ C. and when making the potassium salt the solution may be evaporated to dryness to produce the solid potassium zirconium carbonate. The solution may be stabilized with tartaric or gluconic acid.
