The cleaning device for the rake of a machine for removing debris from the water of harbours etc., has a reciprocating device which lifts the collected material from the stationary rake member. The housing (20) for the mechanism has a channel with rods secured across it acting as a rack for the teeth of the drive pinion. The spindle of this pinion carries a guide roller attached by an arm to another spindle for another guide roller. These two rollers travel along an oval guide path (6) and a straight guide path (8) respectively. The lower extremity of the straight path extends below the lower bend of the oval path by about half the length of the rake. This overcomes overload of the mechanism.
