POLYOLEFINS, STABILIZED WITH ORGANIC HYDRAZINE COMPOUNDS AND PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS

1411302 Stabilizing polyolefins CIBAGEIGY AG 7 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 11033/73 Heading C3P Olefin polymers are stabilized with (1) 0.01 to 5 weight per cent of an organic hydrazine compound of formula wherein R 1 is C 1-5 alkyl, R 2 is H or C 1-5 alkyl, n is 0 to 5, R 3 is H, C 2-18 alkanoyl, or an aroyl group of formula wherein R 4 and R 5 are H, C 1-18 alkyl, C 1-18 alkoxy or halogen; and (2) 0.01 to 5 weight per cent of a phenolic antioxidant containing no hydrazine grouping. The polyolefin may be a polyethylene or polypropylene, or a copolymer of ethylene with butene, hexene, octene or dodecene. The compositions may contain conventional additives, e.g. dilauryl and distearylthiodipropionates, phosphites and carbon black. Many suitable hydrazine compounds and antioxidants are specified and examples describe compositions comprising pentaerythritol tetrakis - [3 - (31,51 - di - t - butyl - 41 - hydroxyphenyl) propionate] together with propylene/ethylene copolymer and (3) N,N1-bis-#-(3,5-di-t-butyl-4- hydroxyphenyl)propionyl hydrazine and (4) N - benzoyl - N1 - [# - (3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4- hydroxyphenyl)propionyl]hydrazine; with bis- 3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenylpropionyl hydrazine and (7 and 8) polyethylene and (10) polypropylene; and compositions comprising ethylene/hexene-1copolymer, N-[#-(3-ethyl- 5 - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl)propionyl] - N1- [# - (3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl)- propionyl]hydrazine and either thiodiethylene glycol bis - (3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl)propionate or trimethylolpropane tris 3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxy - phenylpropionate.
