Paper is prepd. by dispersing within the wet pulp, prior to conversion into a dry web, a sizing agent which comprises the non-polymeric reaction prod. (I) of maleic acid anhydride with a vinylidene olefin of formula (II) (where Rx and R5 are >=5C alkyl). (I) provide a degree of acid water resistance to paper which is higher than is obtd. with prior art sizing agent. (I) may be used in conjunction with a cationic agent such as alum, long chain fatty amine, substd. polyacrylamide or a cationic thermosetting resin. The size may be used with both cellulosic and combinations of cellulosic and non-cellulosic fibres e.g. viscose rayon or regenerated cellulose type may also be used. (I) is used in an amt. of 0-05-3% of the dry wt. of pulp. |
