1466944 Cross-linked polymers of vinylbenzyl chloride and after-treatment thereof ROHM & HAAS CO 11 March 1974 [16 April 1973] 10721/74 Heading C3P A cross-linked macroreticular polymer of vinyl benzyl chloride is produced by polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising vinylbenzyl chloride and such an amount of crosslinker monomer as to provide 0À1 to 30% by weight of cross-linker units in the final polymer. The macroreticular polymer is preferably produced by carrying out the polymerization in the presence of a precipitant, e.g. isooctane or 2-ethylhexanol. Examples are given in which vinylbenzyl chloride and divinylbenzene are copolymerized in an aqueous medium containing methyl isobutyl carbinol. The resulting polymer beads are treated with trimethylamine, or sodium hydroxide and dimethylamine, and, optionally, hydrogen peroxide. |
