In a flat valve assembly esp. for the inlet and outlet valves of a dry-running compressor each valve has a resilient flap biased against a seat. The surface of the flap facing the seat is provided with a resilient coating of a material contg. of polymer.The coating may be applied by spraying and may be applied to the seat side as well as to the other side of the flap, the latter side being engageable with a curved stop plate. The coating may be an elastomer having a hardness <95 degrees Shore A.
