A record carrier is stationary during recording or reading and is subject to a tape tension which is higher than that during the subsequent transport. These different tape tensions are obtained in that the tapelike record carrier is guided each time around a compensating roller of different weight in front of and behind the recording or read head, the braking device being arranged between the light compensating roller and the recording or read head. During operation of the braking device, the heavy compensating roller freely acts on the record carrier and the light compensating roller pulls the record carrier off the supply roll by forced displacement. When the braking device is not in operation, the heavy compensating roller is blocked and the light compensating roller freely acts on the record carrier and is hence returned to its starting position.
