摘要 <p>1519640 Producing molten glass UNION CARBIDE CORP 29 Oct 1975 [30 Oct 1974] 44493/75 Heading C1M Inorganic glass-forming materials 14 are melted in furnace 1 by:- feeding the materials 14 in granular or crushed form into one end 4 of the rotating furnace 1; melting the materials by means of a flame 23 produced by combustion of a fuel (e.g. natural gas or kerosene) with an oxidant gas containing 50-100% by volume oxygen; rotating furnace I at 0À5-30 r.p.m. so that the melt 31 formed forms a layer on the interior surface of the furnace chamber: cooling the outer surface of the furnace by streams 28 of cooling fluid (e.g. water) so that a solid protective layer 29 of solidified melt is formed on the inner surface of the furnace I; and discharging the remaining melt 32 from discharge end 5 of the furnace 1. Preferably feed pipe 17 (through which raw material is fed from hopper 15) and burner 18 (to which are supplied fuel (19) and oxidant gas (20)) are both water-cooled. Furnace 1 preferably comprises a carbon steel shell 2 and a high-alumina content refractory lining 7. The cooling fluid streams 28, supplied from header pipe 25 through valves 27, may each result in the formation of annular ridges 30 of the solidified melt. The molten glass 32 discharged from the furnace passes to refining chamber 34, in which the melt is refined in zone 33 and cooled in zone 35. The melt passes from zone 33 to zone 35 through neck section 37, so that the bubble-containing top layer is skimmed off by refractory block 36.</p>
