The electronic locking system has a key with a generator producing a large number of frequency-modulated carrier waves, and to which a first induction unit is electrically connected. A lock has a second such unit inductively coupled to the first when the key is in a predetermined position in relation to the lock. A signal discriminator circuit is connected in the lock circuit and compares a predetermined sequence of binary signals with that in the generator carrier wave. If they tally, a drive moves the lock between the engaged and the free position.
