Apparatus to detect deceleration of a motor vehicle having an automatic transmission includes a first signal source operated by release of pressure from the accelerator pedal and a second signal source operated by application of pressure to the brake pedal. A detector device having an output signal is connected in series or parallel with said signal sources. The output signal of the detector device may be employed to vary the spark timing of an internal combustion engine.
