A coke oven charging wagon fitted with a lifting arrangement for the covers of the retort inlets, has, also on the wagon, a table on which the inlet covers may be deposited by the lifting arrangement. On the table, cleaning tools, e.g. scrapers, wire brushes, are fixed in a circle and the lifting arrangement rotates the cover between them for cleaning. This does away with the inconvenience and waste of time involved in depositing the covers for cleaning alongside the charging holes. In the routine during which, after the coke has been pushed out, the cover is removed to admit air to burn away the graphite, with the wagon returning to the tower to be filled with coal, a journey to pick up the cover from the top of the retort is saved. The cleaning of the cover is no longer a manual operation. |
