The slide rule has a fixed part (12) and movable parts (13, 16) in a linear or rotary assembly with symbolic and/or numeric legends, e.g. for slide rules. It permits temporary fixing together of the two parts. It is designed for rapid and simple temporary clamping using a clamp which is simply and economically manufactured and applied. One of the parts (19) to be clamped has a soft adhesive foil (23) on its surface facing a smooth surface on the outer part. When the parts are pressed the adhesive force clamps them together. The method may be used to retain the cursor (16) in a fixed position relative to the moving scale (13). In the circular slide rule design, the components are held together by a tubular rivet (14).
