The afterburner is used for waste air containing toxic substances. It is used esp. for toxic substances of low ignition temp. The waste gas is burned without dilution even if its concentrated exceeds the lower ignition limit. The afterburner has a steam air preheater (1) whose outlet is connected by a tube with a nozzle (2) in a bath (3). The catalyst (5) is arranged above the path. Between the catalyst and the bath is a wire fabric (4) which can be heated. The nozzles, bath, wire fabric and the catalyst are situated in a vessel with a hood (6) which is connected to the waste heat boiler.
