The automatic loading and unloading appts. is mounted on a trailer. Bales are collected from the ground and pass to a transverse chain conveyor. On leaving the conveyor bales are lifted by air elevator. Two supports are maintained in supporting position by springs. A movable partition at the front of the trailer is arranged to push rearwardly a vertical stack of bales which is built up, so that they are placed adjacent a previously built pile which has been moved to the rear. The bales are collected from the ground by an inclined conveyor and a further conveyor turns the bales.
