Sheet material for covering substrates is made by forming a mixt. comprised mainly of wood powder and a vinyl resin into sheets 0.2 to several mm thick, pref. using rollers, followed by natural or forced drying of the prod. The prods. are esp. useful for covering furniture walls, transport components, etc. as a cheaper replacement for wood, veneers, paper and plastic sheets. The sheets may be applied to the substrate immediately after manufacture or they may first be reeled for storage. They can be applied to shaped substrates without loss of aesthetic qualities, by using slight heating during application. The sheets may be coloured, structured, printed, sand blasted, etc. wsp. to give a prod. resembling wood veneer. The wood powder used pref. has a degree of fineness of 150-250 ASTM. Beech wood is preferred. The vinyl resin acts as binder and provides the coating with plasticity and varying of permeability.
|
