Potassium nitrate is removed from tobacco and recovered in relatively pure form. The process steps are as follows: The particles of tobacco plant are treated with water to produce an aqueous extract and a fibrous tobacco residue. The extract is concentrated and cooled. The potassium nitrate crystals formed are separated out from the extract. The tobacco residue, moulded into leaf shape, is recombined with the denitrated extract. As a result of the denitrification, the content of nitrogen oxides during combustion of the tobacco product is reduced. |
