ISOLATION OF MORPHINE FROM VEGETABLE RAW MATERIAL

A method of isolating morphine from an aqueous or alcoholic extract of a morphine-containing vegetable material comprises sorbing the morphine on a cation or anion exchange resin having blocked functional groups. A cation resin is blocked with an alkali or alkaline earth metal ion or ammonium ion and an anion resin by chloride or sulphate. Prior to sorption the pH of the extract is adjusted to 4 to 7 when using a cation resin and to at least 8.5 for anion resin. Desorption from a cation resin is effected at pH above 8 and from an anion below 4.5.
