NEW MATERIAL:Fortimicin KG1 (m.pt. 95-98 deg.C) and Fortimicin KG2 (m.pt. 83-85 deg.C) of formula I: (R is H), and Fortimicin KG3 of the formula I: (R is formula II), and their non-toxic acid addition salts. USE:Antibacterials having an antibacterial activity against a wide variety of Gram- positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Useful for medicines and sterilization of machines. PROCESS:Strains for producing Fortimicin KG1, KG2, and KG3, which belong to the genus Micromonospora are cultured in a nutrient medium to produce and a accumulate the antibiotics Fortimicin KG1, KG2, and/or KG3, which are then isolated to give the title substances. Micromonospora olivoasterospora MK-70 strains (ATCC 21819) (FERM-P No.1560) may be cited as the Fortimicin producing strains.
