A ring laser gyroscope has one or more weaker secondary laser modes, operating slightly above the laser threshold, coupling with stronger primary counterpropagating laser modes to produce a dithering effect which reduces or eliminates lock-in between the primary modes. Cavity length control circuitry 32 may be provided to detune the cavity length to allow two secondary opposing modes (40, 42) to be generated Figure 3 (not shown). Alternatively, an external laser beam source (74) may generate the secondary waves Figures (not shown). Finally, part of one of the primary waves may leave the ring laser path through a partially reflective mirror and be acted upon by an oscillating mirror (94) which doppler- shifts the frequency. This mode is reintroduced into the ring laser path to couple with the primary mode Figure 6 (not shown). <IMAGE> |
