A continuous homogeneous cyanoethylation process, in which acrylonitrile is reacted with a compound containing a labile hydrogen atom to form a beta - substituted propionitrile derivative and in which the reaction zone is maintained at a cyanoethylation temperature, is characterised in that a relatively large amount of reactor effluent, i.e. 50-90 wt. %, is recycled to the reactor. High yields of cyanoethylated products are obtained. The process, e.g., has a yield in excess of 95 wt. % of 3,3'-ethylenedioxybis (propionitrile) from the reaction of ethylene glycol and acrylonitrile with the use of a catalyst, e.g., an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide. The products are useful intermediates for the manufacture of plastics and fibres. <IMAGE> |
