The spot lamp with a halogen bulb (16) and a hollow base (10) containing a transformer (15) has a cable connecting it to the mains supply. The base is made up of a bottom part (11) and top part (12) secured along a joint line (13). The top part has an arm (22) projecting upwards each side of the bulb holder housing (17) and between which the housing tilts about a horizontal axis (S). The cable extends through the top part into the housing (17) which has a slot through it so that the swinging casing does not foul the cable. A braking member projecting through this slot controls the swing of the casing. The braking member is a resilient length of rod.
