A rotary pump for hot pitch, asphalt and similar viscous solidifiable materials, having a cylindrical outer extension on a packing gland to provide a prolonged passage around the driving shaft of the pump, thereby allowing material leaking along the shaft through the gland to solidify and be reduced into a powder before falling from the outer end of the packing gland, thus preventing the viscous material from dripping onto a floor or the like before solidification has taken place.
