PURPOSE:To obtain low density ethylene copolymer at high yield by a method wherein an organic ester is included in a catalyst comprising a titanium compound and an organoaluminum compound as well as a small amount of alpha-olefin is preliminarily polymerized and the obtained composite is used. CONSTITUTION:To a catalyst comprising a titanium catalyst (a) obtained by a method of reacting a magnesium compound such as magnesium halide or the like and a titanium compound, an organoaluminum compound (b) such as triethylaluminum or the like and an organic ester (c) such as butyl acetate or the like, 0.01-50g per 1g or (a) component of above 3C alpha-olefin is preliminarily polymerized to obtain a catalyst. By using this catalyst, ethylene and a small proportion of above 3C alpha-olefin e.g. propylene, 1-butene, 1-decene, 4-methyl-1-pentene or the like are copolymerized at a temperature below 100 deg.C to obtain ethylene copolymer with density of 0.9-0.945g/cm<3> in high yield.
