PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound, useful as a coupling component of naphthol dyes and pigments, economically in an industrial scale, by the reaction of an amine derivative and 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid in a water-insoluble solvent in the presence of a specific amine compound. CONSTITUTION:An amine derivative of formula I (A is benzene or naphthalene aromatic ring) is reacted with 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid in a waterinsoluble solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene, etc., in the presence of a tertiary amine compound of formula II (R1, R2 are lower alkyl; benzene ring may be substituted by halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, etc.), e.g. N,N-dimethylaniline. The compound of formula III free from tarry component can be separated from the reaction mixture in high yield. |
