PURPOSE:To obtain dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethyl sulfone, by bringing one or more of methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, etc into contact with a mold with oxidation power under aeroboic states without limiting particularly the condition in contact. CONSTITUTION:One or more of the compounds selected from the group consisting of methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide are brought into contact under aeroboic conditions with a mold having the power of oxidizing them to give dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethyl sulfone. For example, a fungus B-7-12-1 (FERM-P No.3976) belonging to the genus of Cephalosporium and a fungus C-1 belonging to the genus of Cephalosporium may be cited as the mold. The mold can be used alone or in combination together with other mold. Dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethyl sulfone thus obtained by oxidation with microorganism can be separated and purified by a conventional method, e.g., distillation. |
