The wind-driven pump comprises a tower (1) carrying an impeller (2) whose shaft (3) is coupled via a crank mechanism (14, 32, 4) to the vertical piston (8) rod (4) of a piston pump (6) below ground level. The mechanism can increase the crank radius with increasing impeller speed to adapt the torque required by the pump to that available at the impeller shaft. Two spring-loaded centrifugal weights (14) can be mounted on pivots eccentric to the shaft, the carnk pin being carried by one of the weights. The two weights may be coupled via their gear hubs meshing with an intermediate gear wheel.
