PURPOSE:To obtain a carboxylic acid advantageously, by isomerizing a formate in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (a) metal palladium or palladium compound, (b) an alkyl halide or hydrogen halide, and (c) a base, and carbon monoxide. CONSTITUTION:A formate shown by the formula HCOOR(R is straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl, etc.) is isomerized in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (i) metal palladium or palladium compound, (ii) alkyl halide or halogenated hydrocarbon, and (iii) a base (e.g., an organic base, e.g., amine, amide, phosphine, etc.) and carbon monoxide preferably at 150-250 deg.C and under a carbon monoxide partial pressure of 30-150kg/cm<2> to give a carboxylic acid shown by the formula RCOOH in high conversion and high selectivity by using the relatively inexpensive catalyst. Preferably an amount of (i) calculated as Pd is 1-50mg atom per mole of the raw material, and an amount of (ii) is 1-100mol and an amount of (iii) is 1-1000mol per g atom of (i) respectively. |
