The invention relates to a dispersion for use in the preparation of a composition for the controlled release of a biologically active component of the composition. The dispersion comprises a water-insoluble coating-forming polymer in solution in a water-immiscible organic solvent and, dispersed therein, from 2 to 30% of total volume of fine aqueous droplets of diameter less than 20 .mu.. The invention also relates to compositions comprising a biologically active material contained in a coating formed from the dispersion.
