An intake and exhaust system for an I.C. engine having an auxiliary combustion chamber(1) associated with each main combustion chamber(2), and wherein the overall air-fuel charge to all combustion chambers is leaner than the stoichiometric ratio, so that excess air is present in the exhaust gases. A riser member(84) having a first portion of small area adjacent to an auxiliary intake chamber(32) and a second portion of large area adjacent a main intake chamber(20), and the portion having an effective area of 0.2 to 0.4 of the total surface of the riser member(84) is associated with both intake chambers(20,32).
