The clamp secures a flat item on a support, being particularly for holding a mattress on the frame of a stitching machine. A clamping member swings between the upper release and lower engaged positions on a support fixed to the frame by means of two links hinging on itself and the bracket. The links (4,5) protrude one above the other on the front face of the bracket (1), the forward end of the bottom link (4) supporting the clamping member (2) and hinging on one end of the actuating arm (3). The other and free end of the arm is clear of the point (9) at which the top link (5) hinges on it. The actuating arm comprises two flat parallel elements (19) which flank the two links and which are articulated at their forward ends.
