A poly(vinyl alc.) (I)-contg. soln. was treated with Na2B4O7, Na2SO4, and Ca(OH)2, and a cation active compd. was added to the mixt. to recover I. Thus, a soln. contg. I was mixed with Na2B4O710H2O, Na2SO4, and Ca(OH)2, and adjusted to pH 8-10, and then a quaternary ammonium salt was added to the mixt. to sep. I-gel. The I-gel was dewatered and reused.
