MATERIAL BRAKING APPARATUS

Material Braking Apparatus A braking apparatus is provided for a supply spool whereby material drawn from the spool will have a relatively uniform tension. The braking apparatus includes a follower roller in contact with the material on the spool and a brake portion in adjustably controlled braking contact with a brake rotor mounted for rotation with the spool. The follower roller follows the decrease in the diametral amount of material on the spool and simultaneously moves the brake portion toward the center of the brake rotor wherein a uniform braking force on the spool is maintained. In one embodiment, the supply spool is mounted on a shuttle of a cable-winding apparatus so that as the shuttle rotates, centrifugal force will act on the follower roller to urge a roller against the material on the spool and to move the brake portion toward the center of the brake rotor to maintain constant force on the material being withdrawn from the spool.
